NOÉMIE MARSILY

A subtle story about childhood from the colored pencils of the Belgian comics artist

Noémie Marsily (born 1983) is a renowned Belgian illustrator, cartoonist, and animator. In collaboration with writer Isabella Cieli, she created the exceptional children’s comic Memet, recently published in Slovenian by Mladinska knjiga. In 2021, it received the prestigious Bologna Ragazzi award at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The story follows children’s encounters during a camping trip, captivating readers with its sincerity and gentle warmth, tiny details, and a pronounced feeling for characters, relationships, and atmosphere. The feeling of summer lightness and childlike vulnerability is further accentuated by the comic’s sophisticated color palette.

Marsily created the comic using colored pencils; her lines, at times soft and at other times broken, can also fade like memories. The colors bring the summer light to life, evoking a sweet nostalgia for childhood and summer holidays.

At Tinta, Noémie Marsily will present her work with an exhibition at the Center of Illustration Gallery. The exhibition’s opening will be accompanied by a screening of her latest animated short film and a discussion. She will also present her creative process at a masterclass on Saturday at Kino Šiška, where she will also sign her comics at the fair. Additionally, children will have the opportunity to meet her at a workshop.
