kuš! is a small but mighty independent comics publisher from Latvia, founded in Riga in 2007. This year, it is celebrating 15th anniversary. It is best known for its signature pocket-sized anthologies with an eclectic and colourful selection of short comics by Latvian and international artists, with each issue centred around a certain theme. Right from the start, the mission of kuš! is to popularize comics in a country where this medium was practically non-existent and to promote Latvian comics abroad. kuš! doesn’t just publish comic books, it also organizes exhibitions, workshops, residencies, comic jams and other comics-related events. It also travels to international comics festivals and fairs to spread the Latvian comics fever.

The DobraVaga Gallery will feature the group exhibition Back to Nature presenting selected works by kuš! authors. A workshop led by visiting Latvian authors will take place alongside the exhibition. At the Saturday fair at Kino Šiška, you will be able to listen to a conversation with David Schilter, the co-founder and editor of kuš!, and browse the latest kuš! editions – small in size, but large in breadth!

Sometimes, we feel this urge to get “back to nature”, but mostly we stand with our backs to it. Let’s face it: we are destroying the natural world with every step. Literally. At our current pace, the apocalypse seems unavoidable. But is it? It might already be too late to change, but it’s definitely inevitable if we don’t even try.

The exhibition, titled after the eponymous anthology of the Latvian independent comics publisher kuš!, celebrates nature in its many forms, showcasing works by Latvian artists Rebeka Lukošus, Oskars Pavlovskis, Lote Vilma, Agate Lielpētere, Ingrīda Pičukāne, Vivianna Maria Stanislavska and Mārtiņš Zutis, as well as Mark Antonius Puhkan (Estonia), Ciara Quilty-Harper (UK/Ireland), Theo Ellsworth (USA) and Harukichi (Japan).

As part of the exhibition, visiting authors Rebeka Lukošus in Vivianna Maria Stanislavska will lead the Come Back, Nature! zine workshop on Friday, 7th October.

Join Rebeka Lukošus and Vivianna Maria Stanislavska for a zine workshop! Swoosh! Plok plak plak plok! Surprise! Can you hear and see the nature around you? Is it calling you? Come and create a comics zine using unusual materials from nature (and maybe even become one with it). Every participant will receive their own issue of the zine.

The workshop takes place alongside the exhibition Back to Nature by the Latvian comics anthology kuš! and is free.
