BRECHT EVENS
The colourful audaciousness of the Flemish comics virtuoso!
Brecht Evens (1986) is currently one of the most notorious representatives of the contemporary European comics scene, surprising readers and reaping critical praise with each new work. His comic pages overflow with colours and don’t give two hoots about frames and speech bubbles, and the stories cut sharply into modern everyday life. The comic book The Wrong Place (2009) resulted in his breakthrough on the international level, and he also received the Prix de L’Audace for authorial audaciousness at the renowned comics festival in Angoulême, France. It was also there that he received a special jury prize for his latest graphic novel The City of Belgium in 2019. Stripolis will publish a Slovenian translation of the comic book The Making Of, a kind of parody of the art world, in which Evens paints with lush watercolours and characteristic wit the clumsy, amateurish slip-ups of the participants of a small art festival in the Flemish countryside.
The Equrna Gallery will host the world premiere of the exhibition of selected lithographs by Evens, and the opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by a conversation with the author. Evens will be signing his books at the Saturday fair at Kino Šiška, and visitors will receive insights into his work process at his masterclass.
