NOÉMIE MARSILY: IN-BETWEEN

conversation and exhibition (until 10. 11.)

The Belgian artist Noémie Marsily will hold an exhibition of original pages and sketches from the comic book Memet, recently translated into Slovenian, at the Center of Illustration Gallery. A selection of other works that immerse us in her creative world, where comics, illustration, and animation intertwine and complement each other, will also be on display. Her works are often characterized by a blend of poetry and absurdity, reflecting her search for balance between childlike naivety and the complexities of life.

Memet, a tender story about the bonds formed between children during a camping trip, is a sensitive portrayal of childhood, evoking an atmosphere of summer lightness and nostalgia through the use of colored pencils. In 2021, this graphic novel, based on a script by writer Isabella Cieli, won the Bologna Ragazzi Award at the prestigious Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

The title of the exhibition, In-between, alludes to both the freedom of expressive possibilities offered to the artist by different mediums and to the vagueness—those elusive “blind spots”—that cannot be fully expressed through image or language, as well as the empty gutters between panels that leave room for interpretation.

The exhibition’s opening will be accompanied by a screening of the intimate and poetic animated self-portrait Whatever Moves Is Alive, followed by a conversation with the artist, led by literary critic and publicist Eva Ule.
